Printing is the process of duplicating text and images using a master form or template. The earliest non-paper products involving printing included cylindrical seals and objects such as the Cyrus Cylinder and Nabonidus. The earliest known form of printing applied to paper was woodblock printing, which appeared in China before 220 AD. Later developments in printing technology included movable type printing invented by Bi Sheng around 1040 AD and the printing press invented by Johannes Gutenberg in the 15th century. Printing technology played a key role in the development of the Renaissance and the Scientific Revolution, laying the material foundation for the modern knowledge economy and knowledgeable masses.

inkjet printing technology
A type of computer printing that reconstructs a digital image by jetting droplets of ink onto paper, plastic, or other substrates. Inkjet printers are the most commonly used type of printer, ranging from small, inexpensive consumer models to expensive professional machines.

There are two main technologies used by inkjet printers

Continuous (CIJ)
Delivery on Demand (DOD).

Continuous Ink Jet (CIJ)
The Continuous Ink Jet (CIJ) method is used commercially for marking and coding of products and packaging. In 1867, Lord Kelvin patented a siphon recorder, which used inkjet nozzles deflected by a magnetic coil to record telegraph signals as continuous traces on paper.

Delivery on Demand (DOD)
Drop-on-demand (DOD) is divided into thermal DOD and piezoelectric DOD.

hot mod
Thermal inkjet printing induces drop ejection by superheating a small portion of solvent-based ink. Heating by small resistors or other heating elements causes bubbles to form and eject ink droplets. The inks involved are usually water-based, using pigments or dyes as colorants. The ink must have a volatile component in order for vapor bubbles to form; otherwise droplet ejection will not occur. Since no special materials are required, the printheads are generally less expensive to produce than other inkjet technologies.

Piezoelectric DOD
The piezoelectric printing method shrinks the ink chamber by applying electric power to a piezoelectric substance that moves when energized. Ink droplets are ejected onto the print media. Piezo printing is not adopted by many major photo printer manufacturers. However, it has more uses in industrial printing and professional large-scale printers, including special surface printing that can use a wider variety of ink bases.

4 Advantages of Inkjet Printing
Inkjet printers had many advantages over early consumer-oriented color printers.

They are quieter in operation than dot impact or daisy wheel printers.
They can print finer, smoother details with higher resolutions. Consumer inkjet printers with photo-quality prints are ubiquitous.
Compared to technologies such as thermal wax, dye sublimation, and laser printing, inkjet printers have the advantage of virtually no warm-up time and are often less expensive.
Certain types of industrial inkjet printers are now capable of printing wide format at very high speeds or for a variety of industrial applications from signage, textiles, ceramics and 3D printing to biomedical applications and conductive circuits.
